Which Medicare Plan Covers SilverSneakers?

It’s important to stay active and fit during retirement. Sometimes, it’s hard to transition from an active career to “taking it easy!” Many Medicare plans have built-in features that encourage beneficiaries to be healthy. One of those features is the SilverSneakers program.

What Is SilverSneakers?

SilverSneakers is a fitness program specifically designed for older adults who are enrolled in Medicare. The program offers free memberships to a network of fitness centers and gyms (over 16,000 of them!), as well as online exercise classes and even fitness equipment. 

How does SilverSneakers work? If you enrolled in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes SilverSneakers, you’ll also be automatically enrolled in SilverSneakers. The next time you go to your local participating gym, show them your card, and they’ll enroll you in a free gym membership. The program doesn’t include access to a personal trainer, but some gyms offer fitness classes that are also free for you to participate in.

Which Medicare Plans Include Silver Sneakers?

Want to take advantage of a free gym membership? There are plenty of Medicare plans that include the SilverSneakers program. Most frequently, you’ll find SilverSneakers (or a similar plan) included in most Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. However, some Medicare Supplements also include the program. 

You can find out if your plan includes SilverSneakers by checking its Medicare Summar Notice (MSN), a quarterly statement showing all the Medicare-covered services you have received. It also includes whether or not SilverSneakers is part of your plan’s coverage.

You can also contact the insurance carrier directly and ask if they cover SilverSneakers or a similar program. Lastly, you may also visit the SilverSneakers website and use their online tool to find out if your plan participates with them.
