Are Medicare Advantage Plans Free?

Many people wonder if Medicare Advantage plans are truly "free." There's considerable confusion surrounding Medicare, which is why we aim to provide clarity and help you make well-informed decisions, particularly during the annual Medicare enrollment season in October, November, and December.

Start with Original Medicare

Let's begin with Original Medicare. The first step for every individual entering the Medicare program is enrolling in Parts A and B with the government. While Part A coverage is typically premium-free for most enrollees, Part B requires a monthly premium. These premiums form the fundamental structure of Medicare.

Part B premiums vary depending on income, and the Social Security Administration utilizes a two-year look-back period to determine your monthly premiums. Additional costs, known as IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount), may apply to those with higher incomes, affecting both Part B and Part D premiums.

Should you disagree with your IRMAA assessment due to recent changes in your circumstances (such as recent retirement), you have the option to request a redetermination. This process enables you to adjust your premium to reflect your current income.

Choose Additional Medicare Policies

After enrolling in Parts A and B, you face a very important decision regarding your coverage. You have two main options: Medicare Advantage or Medigap. We strongly advise seeking guidance from a Medicare-specialized insurance agent to determine the most suitable path for you. It's important to note that working with an agent comes at no cost to you.

Understand Medicare Advantage Benefits and Costs

When opting for a Medicare Advantage plan, you are still required to pay your Part B premiums to the government. However, with a Medicare Advantage plan, coverage for both Parts A and B is provided by the plan provider rather than directly from the government. It's crucial to grasp this distinction—while your Part B premiums continue to be paid to the government, your coverage is facilitated through the Medicare Advantage plan provider.

It's important to note that Medicare Advantage plans differ significantly from Medigap plans (Medicare Supplements), so it's essential to understand these distinctions as you navigate your Medicare insurance options.

While certain Medicare Advantage plans may advertise "zero premium" options, it's imperative to scrutinize the details. These plans may entail out-of-pocket expenses, copayments, deductibles, and network restrictions. In reality, they are not entirely "free." Insurance carriers offering Medicare Advantage plans receive payments from the government to furnish Medicare-covered services to plan enrollees.

An Alternative to Medicare Advantage

As an alternative to Medicare Advantage, Medigap plans operate differently. You continue paying your Medicare Parts A and B premiums to the government, and in addition, you pay a premium to an insurance carrier for the Medigap contract. Medigap coverage fills the gaps left by Original Medicare (Parts A and B), such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Importantly, with Medigap, you have the flexibility to visit any doctor or facility nationwide that accepts Medicare.
